Department of Medicine Weekly Roundup - July 18 - Review the new policy on Indigenous Reconciliation
Unity Health has committed to changing our relationship with Indigenous peoples by making every effort to respect and affirm the inherent rights and freedoms of Indigenous peoples. To help guide and encourage our efforts towards reconciliation, Unity Health has launched its first Indigenous Reconciliation policy.
Developed by the Office of Indigenous Wellness, Reconciliation and Partnerships (OIWRP), the policy provides the foundations to ensure that all Unity Health staff, physicians and learners are knowledgeable about the legislative framework concerning Indigenous patient care; have the necessary information as to why we have a policy about Indigenous wellness, reconciliation and partnerships; and what is expected of everyone who learns and works within Unity Health.
Leaders are kindly asked to review the policy at their earliest convenience. In particular, please take note of the procedures section, which stipulates that all Unity Health staff, physicians, learners and leaders should actively engage the OIWRP when wanting to engage in activities involving Indigenous peoples or population health, including process improvements, patient care, research and data collection, and heed the recommendations provided.
The policy can be found on the OIWRP page on UnityNet and in the policy system. Any questions about the policy or requests for the OIWRP can be directed to [email protected].
Please note that Roberta Pike, Director of Indigenous Wellness, Reconciliation and Partnerships at Unity Health, will be speaking about this policy at various clinical committee and council meetings in the fall. Please stay tuned for more information.
