ER Guidelines
It's just that easy.
Where Patients Go:
- Please refer to the manual for pdf ED Consult Guidelines (672 KB) for most appropriate services.
ER Consults:
- Mon - Fri, 8am to 5pm: ED Resident
- Mon - Fri, overnight (5pm-8am): Senior resident
- Weekends (8am-8am): Senior resident
Expected Response times for ED pages:
- Responding to pages
- New Consult pages < 5 minutes
- All other pages < 15 minutes
- Seeing Consults:
- Arrive in ED and make decision to admit patients within 1 hour of receiving consult*
- *Senior residents should prioritize patients based upon acuity, it is understood some decisions may not be feasible in one hour
- Must review with your attending physician if referring to another service or discharging home
** IF you know a patient will be admitted, please advise the ED clerical to admit them first and then enter all investigations online using the diagnosis specific GIM-RAPID orderset (e.g. CHF orderset with RAPID admission)!!**
- Review any stat labwork and orders with the ED nursing staff
- e.g. Blood cultures, q4h lytes for hyponatremia, antibiotics, fluids
- STAT Plain X-rays to be done in ED
- All patients should have their medication history documented on the St Mike’s Medication Reconciliation Form
On weekends:
- SMR's: At 8am sharp, please walk down or call down to the Emergency Department to see if there are any pending consults.
