ER Guidelines

It's just that easy.

Where Patients Go:

ER Consults:

  • Mon - Fri,  8am to 5pm: ED Resident
  • Mon - Fri, overnight (5pm-8am): Senior resident
  • Weekends (8am-8am): Senior resident

Expected Response times for ED pages:

  • Responding to pages
    • New Consult pages < 5 minutes
    • All other pages < 15 minutes
  • Seeing Consults:
    • Arrive in ED and make decision to admit patients within 1 hour of receiving consult*
    • *Senior residents should prioritize patients based upon acuity, it is understood some decisions may not be feasible in one hour
  • Must review with your attending physician if referring to another service or discharging home

** IF you know a patient will be admitted, please advise the ED clerical to admit them first and then enter all investigations online using the diagnosis specific GIM-RAPID orderset (e.g. CHF orderset with RAPID admission)!!**

  • Review any stat labwork and orders with the ED nursing staff
    • e.g. Blood cultures, q4h lytes for hyponatremia, antibiotics, fluids
  • STAT Plain X-rays to be done in ED
  • All patients should have their medication history documented on the St Mike’s Medication Reconciliation Form

On weekends:

  • SMR's: At 8am sharp, please walk down or call down to the Emergency Department to see if there are any pending consults.
