SMH Department of Medicine Internal Awards
- Awards nominated by DOM faculty – calls for nominations go out in early February with a mid-March deadline. Awards are decided by a panel of judges. Awards are given out at the DOM annual event in June or at Higgins Day.
Dr. Michael Freeman Award for Professionalism and Integrity
In 2018, the Dr. Michael R. Freeman Award for Integrity and Professionalism was created for the St. Michael’s Department of Medicine by the members of the Division of Cardiology named in honour of our friend and colleague, Dr. Michael Freeman, who passed away suddenly in September 2017. The awardee would demonstrate professionalism, integrity, altruism and leadership.

Dr. Michael Ward Mentorship Award
In 2006, a St Michael’s Department of Medicine mentorship award was created to recognize senior faculty members who have served as outstanding mentors. In 2010, this award was named the Dr. Michael Ward Mentorship Award to honour the late Dr. Michael Ward, who was a clinician scientist at St. Michael's Hospital and was himself an outstanding mentor.

Master Clinician Award
This award was launched in 2022 to recognize clinical faculty members from the SMH DOM who demonstrate consistent outstanding clinical performance and the highest standard of patient care.

Dr. JJ Connon Award
This award is given in recognition of dedication, enthusiasm and excellence in teaching to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical students by the Chief Medical Resident.

Dr. Murray Muirhead Resident Awards for PGY1, PGY2 and PGY3
Established to honour the memory of Murray Muirhead, who died during his internship at the Wellesley Hospital in 1978. Rewards those who demonstrate the qualities, which he exemplified: academic and clinical excellence and humanity in the practice of medicine. Awards are given out annually to one resident at each of the PGY1, PGY2 and PGY3 levels, though occasionally there is a tie and two awards are given.

Dr. Robert Hyland Award for Teaching Excellence
This award is given to an individual staff physician in the Department of Medicine who demonstrates excellence in clinical teaching and, in addition, serves as an important role model to trainees as a superb, caring, and compassionate clinician. Nominees for the Hyland Award are determined based on rankings by trainees from the previous year from the Dr. Rob Sargeant Awards. The selection of this award is in addition to selection of the Dr. Rob Sargeant Postgraduate Education awards by current trainees and is done by a distinct ballot.

Dr. Rob Sargeant Postgraduate Education Awards
These awards recognize outstanding teachers in the Department of Medicine taking into account enthusiasm and interest, rapport with trainees, clinical credibility, accessibility, teaching ability and delegation of responsibility. In 2021, these awards were named to honour the late Dr. Rob Sargeant, who was an outstanding educator and mentor. Nominated by all residents rotating through SMH and confirmed by number of votes.
Dr. Gerald Wong Award for Undergraduate Teaching
This award recognizes dedication and enthusiasm and outstanding teaching ability. The recipient is chosen by undergraduate medical students at FitzGerald Academy.
Dr. Luigi Casella Award
The Casella award is given to the outstanding teacher in the Division of Cardiology. It recognizes teaching excellence and outstanding contribution to Cardiology resident education and is chosen by Cardiology residents and fellows.
