Dear Colleagues,
I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Alexandra Muccilli has accepted the position of Medical Director of the Unity Health Stroke Program and the Toronto South East Regional Stroke program. She will take on this role as of July 1, 2025. Dr. Muccilli is well known across the institution for her clinical and teaching excellence. She is an Assistant Professor and a Clinician Teacher with a Masters in Education, and fellowship training in Neurohospitalist care. She has previously been the Site Director for Neurology at St. Michael’s Hospital, the Fellowship Director for the MS clinic, and the Undergraduate Medical Education Faculty Lead for St. Michael’s Hospital. She was also a central individual in the growth of the St. Michael’s Stroke program and is well positioned to lead it to the next level. Please join me in congratulating Alex. Thank you in advance for your support of her in this new role.
We also wish to thank Dr. Atif Zafar for his excellent leadership in this role over the last 5 years. He was here for the birth of this program and with his leadership, and in collaboration with a growing team of Allied Health professionals and physicians, St. Michael’s Stroke achieved province leading benchmarks for acute treatment, created the existing stroke ward, and grew our Clinical Trials activity. Just last week the St. Michael’s Hospital stroke program achieved certification with Stroke Distinction, a huge team effort that documented excellence of care from the moment of arrival into hospital to discharge and beyond. It was an historic milestone for this program. Dr. Zafar is returning to the United States where he will be coordinating stroke care in the Dallas region and beyond.
Natalie
Interim Physician-in-Chief
Mike joins the Division of General Internal Medicine as a Clinician Scientist and Assistant Professor as of July 1, 2025. He completed his MD from Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Toronto. He then pursued a General Internal Medicine fellowship at the University of Toronto. Dr. Colacci has successfully defended his PhD in Clinical Epidemiology at IHPME. He has been serving as a clinical associate at St. Michael’s Hospital since July 2023.
Outside of work Mike is an amateur vegetable gardener and enjoys making homemade pesto and hot sauce (which he is happy to share with colleagues).
Congratulations to all of the 2025 Art Slutsky Day Award recipients for their exceptional achievements.
A special recognition goes to:
- Alberto Goffi, recipient of the John Granton Award for excellence in Education/Research
- Nava Maham, recipient of the Site Teaching Award (SMH)
Congratulations everyone!
Congratulations to two of our Division of Nephrology members that have been recognized with prestigious University of Toronto awards, celebrating their outstanding contributions to education and mentorship:
- Dr. Ramesh Prasad – recipient of the Mitch Halperin Award for Excellence in Teaching
- Dr. Ron Wald – recipient of the Joanne Bargman Award for Excellence in Mentoring
Congratulations to them on this well-deserved recognition. Their dedication continues to enrich our division and inspire the next generation of nephrologists.
Reminder if you haven’t already done so to complete the Engagement Survey.
The purpose of the survey is to collect feedback from physicians about their work experiences and obtain ideas for what matters most to people in driving engagement.
The survey will provide invaluable insights into the physicians’ level of engagement and fulfillment related to their job, leader, team and the organization.
Please take few minutes to complete it.
