Dear Colleagues,
I am delighted to announce that Temerty Medicine has signed a contract with LGI Healthcare Solutions to provide a new Learner Management System to replace MedSIS and POWER. We are starting work immediately with LGI to plan a transition to the new LMS for implementation mid 2026. The new solution for both the MD Program (MD) and Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) is LGI Education (MedSIS 3C).
Since 2022, the Medical Education Information Technology Transformation (MEITT) Steering Committee, chaired by the Vice Dean, Medical Education, and supporting working teams have had the shared project vision to consolidate existing legacy systems (MedSIS and POWER) and various fragmented IT system across MD and PGME.
After a rigorous RFP process overseen by the MEITT Steering Committee, and extensive negotiations, supported by legal services and procurement, LGI Healthcare Solutions emerged as the successful vendor. Over the next few months, we will develop implementation steps to transition from the current legacy systems to a new, fully integrated system that enables core and ancillary functions of medical education while optimizing the user experience, training outcomes, operational efficiency and facilitating the collection of data to inform ongoing quality assurance and reporting.
This transformational change will be one of the largest, most complex initiatives in our faculty’s history involving MD, PGME and the clinical departments, working in close collaboration with MedIT. The project will require a structured and well-coordinated approach to meet the needs and objectives of all our communities and support alignment that facilitates the project vision.
We are assembling a project team of skilled and knowledgeable staff from the MD Program, PGME and MedIT to lead this implementation in collaboration with LGI and will keep you apprised of key steps and milestones along the way.
I look forward to a successful implementation that transforms our IT infrastructure and better supports our programmatic operations and our faculty, staff, and learners.
Sincerely
Patricia Houston
Further to the measles communication of May 2024, an outbreak of measles has been declared in the Southwestern Ontario region and several cases of measles have been identified in the Greater Toronto Area in recent months. Increasing measles activity in our community has implications for our patients, and for you.
You are highly likely to have immunity against measles, and you were likely asked to share information about your measles immunity status when you joined St. Joseph’s, St. Michael’s, or Providence. However, not all credentialed clinicians have shared this information with Workplace Health, Safety and Wellness (WHSW).
Unfortunately, given technological and human resource constraints, it is not possible for us to review all the information in our files and follow up only with physicians for whom we do not have this information. Therefore, we are sending this e-mail to all active primary or active provisional credentialed clinicians at Unity Health.
Please be aware that in the event you are exposed to measles, if Workplace Health, Safety and Wellness does not have your measles immunity status on file, you may be unable to work at Unity Health or any health care setting for up to 21 days.
Evidence or proof of immunity to measles is:
- documentation of receipt of two (2) doses of measles-containing vaccine on or after the first birthday, with doses given at least four weeks apart (regardless of year of birth); OR
- laboratory evidence of immunity
We are therefore presenting you with the following options:
- You are Immune to measles but you have not submitted your documentation to WHSW:
Please submit your vaccination record or laboratory evidence of immunity to the WHSW department at:
- SMH - [email protected]
- You have been immunized but do not have documentation of two (2) MMR vaccines or are unsure of your immunity status:
Please consult with your primary health care provider regarding serology testing. Please provide the results of your serology testing, if completed, to your site’s WHSW email address outlined above.
- You have not received two (2) doses of measles containing vaccine:
Report in person to your site’s WHSW department to receive your measles-containing vaccine. You may be asked to return in 4 weeks to have a second dose administered if applicable.
- You are choosing not to update WHSW with your measles immunity records.
You may assume that WHSW has your measles immunity record. In the event that you are exposed to measles, WHSW will review your file to determine your immunity status. If your immunity record is on file and you are immune to measles you will be able to continue working. However, if WHSW does not have evidence of measles immunity you may be unable to work at Unity Health or any health care setting for up to 21 days.
If you have any questions, please review the Public Health Ontario Measles: Information for Health Care Providers resource document at www.publichealthontario.ca. If your questions are not answered there, please e-mail WHSW at your site’s email address (listed above).
Celebrating Our Physicians: Champions of Compassion and Excellence
On May 1, Unity Health Toronto celebrated National Physicians Day, recognizing the outstanding contributions of our physicians who prioritize kindness, innovation, education, and excellent care. Across our network, physicians are dedicated not only to patient care, but also to advancing education, research, and innovation. Their efforts continue to inspire and strengthen the compassionate, excellent care we strive to deliver every day. Dr. Alberto Goffi from our Department was featured!
Dr. Alberto Goffi, a Critical Care and Internal Medicine physician at St. Michael’s
Your colleagues have nominated you as one of the most collegial doctors – the one who always tries the best for patient care, who lifts the load for people around them, and who offers learners engaging opportunities in a safe and supportive atmosphere. How have you cultivated such a collegial spirit?
During medical school, my best friend and classmate was diagnosed with cancer. For four years, I supported him as both a student and a family member navigating the healthcare system. That experience deeply shaped my understanding of how much compassionate, collegial care matters – not just for patients, but for families and the care team. I strive to create the environment I wished for then: one where patients are truly cared for, colleagues support one another, and learners are valued and safe to grow.
What’s something about medicine that never ceases to amaze you even after all these years?
What never ceases to amaze me about medicine is the constant element of the unknown and the opportunity for discovery. As a teenager, I loved detective novels – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie – and I find that same spirit of investigation in clinical practice. Every patient presents a new puzzle. Even after all these years, there isn’t a single day that I don’t learn something new. That blend of curiosity, challenge, and continuous learning is what keeps medicine endlessly fascinating.
What’s the most unexpected lesson medicine has taught you about people? What’s something your patients have taught you?
Medicine has taught me that everyone has a story – and that story often holds more insight than any test result. Listening to patients and families share their life experiences has given me a deeper understanding of human behavior, resilience, and the power of relationships. They remind me, time and again, of what truly matters: connection, compassion, and the bonds we build. In the midst of illness and uncertainty, it’s often love, not medicine, that carries people through. That’s a lesson I carry with me every day.
Who was your most influential mentor (physician or non-physician) and why?
My most influential mentors have been my mother and Dr. Simon Abrahamson. As a primary school teacher, my mother instilled in me a love of learning and a deep respect for people – the foundation of how I approach both medicine and life. Later, during my fellowship at St. Michael’s, Dr. Abrahamson shaped my clinical identity. His remarkable clinical reasoning, unwavering commitment to patient care, and passion for critical care medicine continue to inspire how I practice and teach. Both taught me that excellence comes from curiosity, passion, and integrity.
What drives you in your career, and how does your unique perspective shape the way you contribute to Unity Health’s mission?
What drives me is a deep passion for what I do – caring for patients and families with compassion and purpose, while helping to shape the next generation of clinicians. I believe our role isn’t just to care, but to teach, inspire, and lead by example. I am grounded in the belief that each generation should elevate the next, and that humanity – empathy, humility, and connection – is at the heart of good medicine. My family keeps me centered and reminds me daily of the importance of balance, perspective, and living the values I hope to pass on.
