Congratulations to Dr. Darren Yuen for receiving the Keenan Award for Medical Discovery at this year's Angels Den. His project, titled "No More Needles: A Non-Invasive Approach to Detect Kidney Scarring," was recognized for its innovation.

The Challenge: Chronic kidney disease – caused when diabetes or high blood pressure irreversibly damages the organs by scarring them – affects one in 10 Canadians. The usual way to diagnose kidney disease is by a needle biopsy. Not only is the procedure painful, it can be dangerous: it may cause bleeding, sending patients to the ICU.

The Solution: Dr. Darren Yuen has developed a simple, non-invasive ultrasound scan that can take a picture of the kidney to see if there is scarring and how extensive it is. This first-of-its-kind innovation will revolutionize care for people around the world who are living with chronic kidney disease.

Physicians who join Unity Health after Nov. 30 will be required to complete Epic Systems training – or attest to an exemption and complete the end user proficiency assessment (EUPA) – in order to gain access to the new EPR system. The no pass, no access provision will remain in effect.

In the months following go-live, the EPR Education team will continue to support Epic Systems training and registration, as they expect to deliver a high volume of classes synchronously to accommodate the volume of new hires joining Unity Health. Beginning on Dec. 9, EPR training for new physicians will take place as part of the credentialing process. The process is as follows:

  • Medical Affairs will inform the EPR Education team of any new physicians and their start dates.
  • The EPR Education team will pre-assign physicians to their required training course(s) the week before their start date. Training will be delivered cross-site, and physicians will be expected to travel.
  • Physicians will be sent an EPR system onboarding package with instructions to log into Elevate to complete any pre-work and confirm the date(s) and time(s) of their training session(s).
  • Physicians who meet the exemption criteria can complete the exemption attestation in Elevate, un-enroll from their training session(s) and proceed to the EUPA.
  • Physicians will attend training as scheduled and complete the EUPA.
  • Access to Epic will be enabled once physicians are credentialed and have completed the EUPA.

Please be advised that the post-go live training plan will continue to be refined as we slowly transition to a future state model. We’ll continue to keep you informed as we make additional changes.

Please also be reminded that on-boarding activities will be minimized between Nov. 23 and Dec. 6, and can only occur if physicians do not require Epic Systems training or if there is an emergent and critical clinical coverage issue. Please reach out to Medical Affairs if you have any questions about this. Urgent questions pertaining to learners can be directed to Education portfolio leadership.

Thanks for your continued support with Epic Systems training. If you have any questions about the post-go live training plan, please email the EPR Education team at [email protected]
