Claudia DosSantos was featured on CTV News for her Angel’s Den proposal ‘Surviving Sepsis: a new treatment for Bacterial Infection’
The Challenge: Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency caused when the body’s response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs. Worldwide, there are 50 million cases each year. As the only treatments are antibiotics, which aren’t always effective, and organ support, one in five people will die from this common hospital complication.
The Solution: Dr. Claudia dos Santos and Dr. Amin Ektesabi have developed a new treatment to block inflammation, supercharge the white blood cells’ ability to kill bacteria, and protect against heart and lung failure. Now they want to test it in pre-clinical trials–so they can move quickly to save lives.

Natalie Wong – 2-472b Bond
Daniel Huang, Chief Medical Resident – 2-472a Bond
Jessica Comilang and Julia Stratta – 2-468 Bond
Sharon Straus remains in 1-420 Bond. Erin Walsh will be moving into Sharon’s suite in the next while.
Do you need to sign up for EPIC Research training? Please review the EPIC research courses below.
Attached are steps and instructions on how to remove the research module from your profile if research training doesn’t apply to you.
1. Research viewer - which allows you to view e.g., retrospective chart review study, but you cannot document or enter study related data in Epic for research.
2. Research coordinator (refers to the level of access not the position itself per se) - who can document and enter data into Epic for research. Examples would include adverse event documentation.
- To act as a signing authority on study meds/tests input by research staff before the orders are visible and active
- PIs can view any questionnaires or smart forms built for specific research studies in Epic
- PIs may need to review adverse events that are documented in Epic
- PIs will place orders for INV Medications in Epic.
- To receive things like admission notifications that are sent to the PI inbox.
The coordinator course is mandatory for anyone who is a PI on HealthCanada regulated research.
