Retirement for physicians is not just an end to clinical practice, it can open doors to a wide range of meaningful opportunities. Options such as teaching, mentoring, consulting, volunteering, or participating in medical boards allow retired physicians to continue contributing to healthcare without the intensity of full-time practice.

Finding the necessary information to access these opportunities can present a challenge and sometimes a disincentive. Medical Affairs at University Health Network set out to explore these “echo” career opportunities and suggestions with the intent of providing in- depth information as to how to access these. They will share with you specific suggestions for committee work and consulting, entrepreneurial choices, medical practice at home and abroad, as well as academic and CME teaching opportunities that are available. Our discussant, Dr. Behdin Nowrouzi-Kia, will provide insights from his recent paper, “Approaches to Enhancing and Sustaining Engagement in Post-Retirement Work: A scoping review”.

Unity Health is rolling out Microsoft 365 to all staff, physicians and learners this year. This project is an important step in strengthening collaboration across programs and sites, and enhancing how we protect our digital information.

When are we transitioning to Microsoft 365?

The transition to Microsoft 365 will begin with Providence and back office/corporate services in January, followed by St. Joseph’s and St. Michael’s through the spring. The implementation will take place in two phases:

  • Phase 1: All staff, physician and leader accounts will be moved to the cloud, and all users will gain access to updated versions of Office 365 core applications (Office, Word, Excel and PowerPoint). We will also introduce OneDrive.
  • Phase 2: Collaboration tools, such as SharePoint and Teams for internal chat and file sharing, will be introduced and supported. During this phase, we will continue to use Zoom for virtual visits.

Why are we transitioning to Microsoft 365?

Our current version of Microsoft is no longer supported, so this transition is required to keep our systems safe and maintain performance and compatibility with other systems.

With Microsoft 365, teams will be able to share files more easily, work together in real time and access documents from any Unity Health device. The cloud environment will also reduce security risks and better safeguard our information.

There will be two license types to meet different user needs.

Where can I find more information?

You can stay up to date on timelines, training and support on the Microsoft 365 page on UnityNet. Please note that staff, physicians and learners will also be contacted directly in the weeks leading up to their transition. Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation.
